sheep film

July 2007

Photoshop, Maya, Shake

The eye was built in Maya, lit with an HDRI panorama shot on location (a bit overkill for this project, but a good learning experience) and rendered out in layers. The texture for the iris was based on a photograph I took of the main actor's eye, who is transformed into a sheep during the course of the film. I tracked the cgi onto the HDV footage, which was a bit trickier than expected: the tracking markers I had affixed onto the sheep proved pretty useless, since not only its head was moving, but also the skin itself, so I had to track directly on the eye and correct the results by hand. Because the shape of the eye socket was changing, I had to animate the alpha channel of the render by hand using quickpaint; the markers also had to be painted out again. Finally I tried to match the color values and lighting, then animated the secondary movement of the eye by hand and tried to match the movement of the spec and reflection passes. I also did two other shots in a similar manner.
